I am going to purchase a dual band ( 2m / 70cm ) mobile rig _real soon
now_. I think that I have narrowed it down to either the Kenwood TM-732
or the Yaesu FT-5100. Anyone use either/both of these radios? Any other
radio that I should consider?

Does the 5100 have the ability to Priority Monitor a frequency while
scanning
a bank, or does the radio have to stay on one freq? The Yaesu FT-530
handheld
will not scan the bank while Priority Monitoring is activated.

My primary interest in using a mike at all is HF contesting. I would assume

Rig in use at moment is TS940.
Thanks for your help.

Don't bother. It would be less expensive to buy a commercial-
built 6 M or 15M rig. You would end up "building a new rig" anyway.
That rig was built so tight (FCC type acceptance to prevent modifications
for 11M) that is would not be practical to modify it for any other bands.
There are some mods to make it receive out of band, but I don't think you
can make it transmit out of band.

Recently I took advantage of Radio Shack's sale on this HT and
finally got on VHF; it's fun. However, I have a couple of question
on things I couldn't find in the manual.
1. If I am using external power from my car or a power supply in
the shack, should I have the nicad battery pack removed from the
radio?
2. What is a "normal" setting for the power-save feature; i.e., is
the factory setting of 1/16 sec. about right?

Also, does anyone know of any single chip RF trans and receiver packages?

Can't speak for the TM732, but I've had a ft5100 for about a month now
(love it!)..
Memories are arranged in 2 banks for each side, each bank containing 20
memories, for a total of 40 VHF and 40 UHF. This layout makes it possible
to scan 2 seperate banks in one band. Very handy if you monitor 1 favorite
repeater continously, but want to scan other repeaters in the same band.
And having 2 banks per band is great if you regularly drive between 2
cities.
A scan will only go through one bank (20 memories). Very very fast scan
rate. Push 2 buttons to go to the other bank in the same band. Of course,
both VHF and UHF can be scanned simultaneously, but it is scanning 1 bank
on each band.
Each bank has 2 upper and lower programable memories for band scanning
(versus memory scannng). It also has 'Priority monitoring'...when enabled,
will check your favorite frequency every 5 seconds for activity. And
another feature is 'Call frequency'...programable frequencies you can
access by a button. Then theres 'Alternating band memory scan'....This
will scan 1 bank in each band by swapping the bands continously between
main and sub-band positions.
All rather confusing...and takes a while to figure out (let alone
program!). The simple answer to your question is no..you can't store VHF
in UHF banks or vice/versa. But with 4 banks, priority monitoring, 90 some
memories, and alternate band scan you have lots of options and different
ways to accomplish what your're looking for.

Subject: Yaesu FT-41R PL problem--read before buying (FT530 note at end)(LONG)
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
This note is being provided as a service to the amateur
community. It is not intended to endorse or dis-endorse
this product, but rather to educate the community to a
problem, for which a solution exists.
******************************************************
The Yaesu FT-41R (and perhaps it's sister 11R) has a problem
with the PL (CTCSS for you Motorola lawyers) tone frequencies.
If you do NOT buy the optional FTS-26 CTCSS DEcode (tone
squelch) board, the PL tone is generated by the microprocessor
itself, rather than a dedicated PL tone chip (MX265). As a
result, the PL tone generated can be slightly off, to a
degree to make certain reed-type decoders used on some repeaters
go nuts. This makes repeater use difficult, if not impossible. If you do
go out and buy the optional FTS-26 board, the tones are
generated by the board, and this should not be a problem.
It turns out that the PL tone is too high in pitch, and this difference
is audible at the 250.3 PL. Yaesu's fix, according to
Yaesu Tech Bulletin 9420 is to increase the size of the
capacitor on the microprocessor crystal to pull the frequency
down, thereby lowering the PL. The mod specifically calls for
C2018 to be changed from 33 pF to 39 pF.
I have not done this yet, as I am awaiting the part from Yaesu.
This mod is built into the factory beginning with lot #12.
Units prior to this will need to be mod'ed or you may just
be lucky. To determine your lot number, look at your serial
number. the lot number is the two digits immediately following
the letter. (i.e. a S/N of 3M078626 would indicate a lot #07)
If you are contemplating buying a unit at a retailer, check the
serial number -- if it is prior to lot #12, test the unit on
a few repeaters and see if your voice drops in and out.
Newer repaters with electronic decode tend not to be as sensitive
to PL frequency mismatch as are old mechanical reed style decoders.
************************************************************
Also, to FT-530 owners:
There is an existing INTERMOD fix for the 530. Now, before you
all go and jump to put your units in the mail, let me tell you
what this mod does.
The mod entails changing the first IF frequency of both receivers.
The VHF frequency moves from 15.25 to 17.25 MHz, and the UHF
frequency moves from 47.225 to 44.775 MHz.
What this buys you:
If your INTERMOD problem results from two strong signals that
are mixing in the front end to produce a signal at the frequency
you are trying to receive, this mod will do NOTHING for you.
(e.g. you are listening to 446.00 MHz, and two signals at 452.00
and 458.00 MHz mix to produce a tone at 446.00 MHz, then you are
out of luck).
However, if the problem results from two strong signal
that are mixing to produce the IF frequency, then this may help.
Alternatively, if the problem is really IMAGE response
(you are picking up a station that is 2xIF away from your desired
station), then this MOD will help.
Think carefully and investigate thoroughly what your problem really
is before you send the unit in. The mod does nothing to affect
receive range, nor does it do anything to change RF desense,
overload or other nastiness, just changes the image response
frequency...
A hint in diagnosing your problem... The first IF frequency is
not dependent on the frequency tuned, but rather which receiver is
used. The left receiver uses the VHF IF, while the right receiver uses
the UHF IF. Tuning a UHF frequency in the VHF side uses the VHF IF,
and vice versa.
************************************************************
Sorry this post got so long, but info is info.
